Know this much

How did we get to a stage where we don’t know we don’t know? I don’t know but I can hazard a guess. We are never more than one click from a fact We live in an age where data is king Data is processed Learning to process data is learning One minute I was in a realm of limitless possibilities The next we’re running out of clouds to store our unlimited knowledge I know this sounds unhinged But the brooms are running amuck. The door of binary certainty is open or shut It will never never close again It’s not even funny I mean have we read We? George Orwell did We managed to turn that into a cctv camera A husk of the original longing. Rational is holy Rational is clean and good. Actually what we mean is certain This void of real meaning has been filled By chancers, fakes and quacks Which makes it easy for rationalists To step up like Obrien and say There there let rationalism save you now Rationalism is the pre-Newtonian idea of knowledg...

in the terminus

Image
26 th August 2015 20 past seven in the morning. It is or rather was but still might be a peculiarly grey affair. The day that is if that is indeed what you prefer to call the space between rising and getting back therein. Answers on a birthmark you need not replay straight faced but anything you fail to mention will be charged directly to your bedroom.  I would also like to reminisce you that grey gets a hard time in the black and white and read all over realm of the Corby music press. Grey is the colour, indeterminate is the name and any unknown fool knoweth this poses a threat to the AC/DC types in power. How can that be I hear you ask when both are ambivalence incarnate. Well well well I see you but I can’t hear you and as so much of my schtick is based on memory and precognitive judging I’ll leave my appearance this morning at that. Well I’m Sir Prized to be finally receiving my metal. Sur Lee you dial my no.? I’m not a big fan of dancing let alone calling ...

Listen to Brian

The problem with Brian and Richard and all the other ultra intelligent rationalist atheists is that whilst they understand that yeah there is wonder and awe to be found in the cosmos and quantum mechanics, they still understand perception and thought in pre-Newtonian mechanistic modes - this is this is that. This goes there. That goes here. It stands to reason that if the Universe, which we are now beginning to understand scientifically speaking is created by our observing it, can be deeply mysterious and contradictory then so can human perception and understanding. For me belief is like a quantum thought experiment. If I know there is a god then there is one or rather one enters into being and equally in turn out of being. However, the greatest paradox and stumbling block between Bri and Dick and those of a cosmic bent is that belief is not binary because it comes from a space before we start to schematize thought into either or compartments. So in short – human thought and percepti...

Kids Co and Real Art

Image
It is very possible that Kids Co. have become too famous and in this country fame and money are a highfalutin abstraction. I feel very sad to see the amazing work they do broken down into lists of incomings and outgoings but judging by the centrifugal forces of finances I should not be surprised. The critical article in the Spectator starts its case by saying that Camilla never wrote to a woman who donated 200,000 pounds after selling her house. I can only say that I received, from Camilla, the most touching letter I’ve had from anyone when I asked a few friends to donate money for my 40th birthday instead of buying a present. It was the closest I ever came to receiving a medal whilst having a compassionate hug. This was also the case when we organised an art raffle a couple of years ago. The tone of the second letter was perhaps less personal but hey I thought it’s an art raffle and by now Kids Co was a celebrity cause. The criticisms of Kids co are all on the secretarial level. I s...

As I ask you to Focus on - Paintings about David Bowie

Image
I have recently considered the validity of making some telephone paintings in the vein of Maholy Nagy as a means of exploring Art in the age of Mechanical reproduction. This is still a salient text but the title is anachronistic. I mean it implies some kind of delay whereas now the dissemination of an image is instant. Also with the arrival of the meme we have managed to weave our over awareness of imagery into language itself. This is Derrida’s idea of the trace gone literally mad if madness is life led by neurosis. I mention this because I think it get me close to the reasons I make paintings in oil on canvas, which in a chronological sense are even more anachronistic. It is understandable that   people believe that progress means that using a certain look of painting is not valid as a serious art form because its “been done before”. Sometimes we are more comfortable with a deliberately mechanistic strategy, which unmasks the fake universality of the individual mark of expressio...

The Outsider

It’s Monday and they’re here The bluebells I mean Their timid arrival trumpeted By one final clarion call From some sheepish looking daffs Like stragglers from yesterday’s marathon The Crataegus monogyna blossom spatters Nettle leaves and ivy making Polka-dot pattern below eyeliner Stagnant millpond water wafts I’m not going to beat myself up Over rhyme and reason Just walk and observe Flinching briefly at the sight of a gnarled Pendulous snail hanging from a twig Twisted black plastic bag Doggy do doggy don’t A document of owners urge to forget Birdsong drifts through the trees Mingling with human utterances Pastel polo shirts glimpsed between branches Titleist specs upon the fairway visible If Camus had been a golfer would he have felt? More connected?
